The dragons descended to Earth like stars; like controlled radiation flares of incomprehensible magnitude, chemical explosions that scorched carbon-based life.
The tragedy was that of scale. At first, we were beneath their notice. They did not purposefully kill us. They did not feed on us.
We could have burrowed underground and escaped.
But humanity yearns to shout its existence. We want to know the stars, and be known by them.
The detonation of a single warhead did not hurt the dragons much. To them it was a flare in the darkness. It only made them look down and see us.
